HOMEWORK POLICY:
My homework policy is straight forward. I want each and every student to succeed. I expect every assignment to be done by every child to the best of their ability. I do not take off points for late work, however, I will be evaluating and assessing late assignments in their H.O.W.L.'s (Habits of Work and Learning). Also, I will be asking students to self-assess their work habits throughout the year. My hope is that as each child matures, so will the ability to be more responsible with their assignments and homework.
READING IN CLASS:
Your student will be expected to read a class novel together throughout the year. These books can be brought back and forth from home, if necessary, but the majority of the reading will be read and discussed together in class. Also, I assign a book a month. I pick a genre for the month that should be read. At the beginning of each month, we will do a project with the book of the previous month, and pick out another book for the current month.
If your child is an avid reader, they can exceed the standard by reading what I have asked AND any other books that parents approve of. These should be chapter books, but I encourage all reading materials. To get credit, your student should bring in the book, put a sticky note with their name on the book, and leave the book on the corner of my desk. I will, or a volunteer will, ask a few questions to your child about the book. I will write down the name of the book, the number of pages, and the quarter they read the book in. If your child is unable to answer basic questions about the book, I will ask them to go back and reread or look back in their book. There is no book report to be done, just a conversation with your child and me and/or volunteer about the book is the requirement. I have a chart in the back of the room to show progress. (Any parents that would like to volunteer to sit and listen to book talks is more than welcome. Please email me so we can set up appropriate times.)
READING OUTSIDE OF CLASS:
I do want each and every child in my class to be reading 30 minutes outside of my classroom, five days a week. If this means that they read 10 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at the end of the day, that is okay (or any combination that works, fitting in 30 minutes a day). If they plan according to their weekly plans to read on weekends, that is fine as well.
Even though I don't require filling out a reading log, I do expect that each student is reading 30 minutes, over and above class time each day. I will be jotting down their reading choices, and I will expect them to be reading "just right" books. If your student wants to try a book that is beyond their reading level, I am okay with that decision as long as the parent is okay as well. I do not want to hold any child back who is motivated to read a self-selected book. Having said that, I want to be able to give the tools to each student that may choose a book that is above their reading level to help them succeed. Some tools include listening books, the promise that adults will read with him/her, and/or summaries to help them with comprehension of text. I am very flexible, yet aware that letting a student read a "hard" book may turn them off for reading. My hope is that if a child is motivated to read a book, even if it is not a "just right fit" book, I will give them the tools necessary to succeed in loving the book that they read because they can read it, and they have the tools necessary to succeed.
Although there is no reading log, I am going to ask parents to sign off each day that their child reads 30 minutes. This sign off will be stapled to the plan book and will be required weekly throughout the school year. This will help me with the assessment of each student in their H.O.W.L.'s assessment, which includes responsibility and perseverance.
There will be a handout at the beginning of the year explaining my requirements, but the general overview is that each student should read 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and parents should initial in their own child's plan book that their child has done so to insure that their child will receive credit for their out of class reading time.
REDOS:
Our school policy is that students have 48/2. What this means is that your child has 48 hours to tell me that they want to redo an assignment. Then, they have 2 weeks to get it accomplished.
I allow most of my assignments to be redone. Some exceptions are true/false papers and matching items/vocabulary papers. I try to be very clear about what assignments can be redone or not. Basically, if a student can just change an answer quickly, but doesn't learn from their mistakes, the assignment will not be able to be redone.
Also, I do require that the student completes a "REDO TICKET". My intent is that the student gets the help that they need in order to do the assignment correctly the second time.Time for help on a "redo" assignment is available after school and during T.L.T. (Targeted Learning Time) when designated.
I want students to reflect on their work habits. Adding the REDO TICKET puts one more step into thinking about doing one's best work the first time around, not just do an assignment to get it done.
If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
PARENT HELP/EDITING:
I encourage each and every student to check his/her work over and have others, parents and peers, check over work as well. I would love it if all students would take their work home and have their work (all assignments, big and small) checked over. Having said that, I DO NOT feel it is your responsibility to fix all of his/her errors or to feel responsible for doing your student's work. If your child is not getting a concept, please let me know. Shoot me an email, or write me a note on the assignment itself. I can work with him or her during T.L.T. (Targeted Learning Time) and/or after school.
There is an after school bus on Mondays, Tuesday, and Thursdays. Most of the time, I am available on these days for extra help. Just let me know in advance if you are expecting me to work with your child after school so I can make sure that I am available.
